Best Time To Post To Twitter

As someone who advises people on their blogs, people often ask me "When is the best time to post to my blog" and now with the emergence of Twitter (micro-blogging) "When should I post to twitter."

I did a little research on Twitter and, yep, sure enough, it's pretty much the same answer for Twitter as for Blogging.

Best traffic days are TUESDAY through FRIDAY. If you post updates those days, you'll have highest exposure for re-tweets and shares, just like your blog.

Best time periods are between 10am PST and 2PM PST. This is because that's the highest period of people online to access your content, and their highest period of usage.

Now, that does not mean you shouldn't post during other times; however. I'll tell you why.

If you assume that the person who reads their blog posts and twitter updates is always online at 7:00 a.m., then you're assuming that everyone is a morning person. At the same time, if you assumed that the person who reads blogs and tweets is up at 1:00 a.m. because they're a night owl, then you'll miss the morning people. So, my advice is to post twitter tweets THROUGHOUT the DAY.

There is powerful software to help you post multiple times a day. It used to be called "Tweetlater.com" and now is called SocialOomph. Check it out - there's a PRO version that gives you even more control, and if you're going to be professional about sending email welcomes, and want to add other twitter management features, then upgrade and pay the money. Otherwise, the free version is fine for just tweeting later.

In addition, if you, like me, are busy and can't find time every week to add each follower to your twitter, one, by one, by one (tedious, huh) then I suggest you use Tweepular software, that let's you bulk add big chunks of Tweeps at a time. (Yeah, that's what they call Twitter users: TWEEPS). So, happy Twitting, Tweep!

How Do You Use Twitter?

What are you doing?
Where are you right now?
What did you just post on your blog?
Are you inspired by a website link?
Where is everyone?
What do you need to communicate quickly?
Hey guys! What do you think of THIS!?

How do YOU use TWITTER?

Check out this groovy video that shares more ideas for how to use TWITTER:

How Do You Use Twitter? from biz stone on Vimeo.

Twitter rocks! Use Twitter to discover and receive:

  • Real-time feedback from followers...
  • Discover new websites and ideas…
  • What’s HOT? Fashion… music… thoughts… movies… discover BUZZ
  • Keep up with people – where are they? What are they doing? What is IMPORTANT to friends and associates…

Question: Why is Twitter the fastest growing Social Network on the Internet?

Answer: TWITTER is fast, simple, easy, and concise.

What is Twitter? Twitter is an instant online status update limited to only 140 characters, so you are FORCED to be brief! Hallelujah! It is super easy to add people you want to follow and also easy for them to follow you. You just type in their name and find them, then click "follow" by their name. It's that easy. Then, on your home page, you'll receive their updates every time you log-in to Twitter.

The only thing is, if you follow a lot of people, you’ll get so many updates, it is impossible to read them all.

Who FOLLOWS YOU on Twitter?

You can send updates to Twitter from your regular home page or from your mobile phone or IM using SMS.

Are you building a fan base? What do they want to know about you? I like Twitter because I can post a question and get quick feedback. I can also share feeds. I also TWEET when I publish my blog updates as Twitter is another way for people to find my blog feed through TWITTER. The number of people you can follow is limited to 2,000 (to reduce SPAM).

Who do you FOLLOW on Twitter? Why? What are you looking for?

Most people will get followed when they have important things to say, their posts are meaningful, or they are popular to certain other people. Or, all of the above. As with blogs, the more useful your content of "tweets" the more likely you will be followed by other Twitter users.

By the way, if you want to follow me, use these shameless promoter links (heh heh):

AspireNow (blog feed +): http://twitter.com/aspirenow
Note: According to Twitter, you can only FOLLOW 2,000 people (to limit SPAM). However, there is no limit on how many can follow you! :)

Are you feeding your blog to Twitter? It's a smart way to get more followers to your blog:

Ways You Can Make Twitter More Useful To YOUR Activities:

Bands: A band sends their tweet to fans that they're going on stage. Fans tweet back "play XYZ song" so they can coordinate their set list to what the crowd actually wants to hear at that moment!

Journalists: A journalist sends a tweet asking what topics people want to see next, then writes to the responses she receives.

Web Designers: People tweet the web designer their ideas for improvement directly to their @tweet twitter address. The designer then incorporates changes more quickly with the real-time feedback.

Political poll: A politician is giving a speech. People start twitting their tweets about reaction to the speech into Twitter, and the Politician's writers can give them an instant teleprompt to change the speech on the fly with the feedback from Twitter.

Business announcement: A group of users within a large company want to send instant communication out to the group. They send a tweet which is then accessible to all the members of the group to comment and provide instant feedback.

Business PR: Announce new products and services, or innovations to existing products and services, through your TWIT feed.

Personal network: have friends know what to bring to a party or meet at a certain location through your tweets.

Tweet Suggestion: Additional Twitter Tools:

TWEET BEEFS: What would you like to see LESS of on Twitter:

Ok, I'll start it... my personal tweet beefs (yep, that's a Scotty-sniglet):

1. Don't tell me you're having coffee (unless you say where).
2. Don't tell me you're going PEE or POO (nope - don't wanna know)!

How else can you see ways to use Twitter? Want to add your own Tweet Suggestion or Tweet Beef? Please share below!

Cheers and happy tweets!

How Bloggers Make Money On The Net

Have you been reading about bloggers making money online and thinking about jumping on the blog bandwagon?

Before you do, consider this:

Less than 1% of blogs make any significant money.

Okay, now that you know this, you might want to know what the successful bloggers do to break free from the pack of other bloggers and make more money.

How bloggers make money from web blogs:

1. Successful bloggers use a clean and simple design.

With a design that is easy to navigate and makes it easy to (a) subscribe, (b) follow, (c) read, and (d) drill down into articles, a blog is highly more likely to keep the visitors they attract longer and also draw more repeat visitors.

2. Successful bloggers provide high quality, original, and unique content.

If you're providing information on video cameras, you might provide a series of articles reviewing cameras. Other times, you can provide information comparing one type of camera to another. In other blog posts, you might highlight how people capture images using new techniques. You may engage bloggers by holding contests. You could request a guest post. Or, you might ask other people for feedback about an idea. The more interactive you make your blog, the higher the traffic you'll receive.

3. Successful bloggers publish consistently and often.

I've noticed that the most successful bloggers publish between 5 and 20 articles per week. That's a lot of writing. They are also consistent. I think there are ways to boost production twofold that won't take that much more time, by writing more reviews of books, technology, and techniques. We'll see how this technique pays off in the upcoming months.

4. Successful bloggers optimize by spreading the word.

You can spread the word for your blog by burning your feed to various feedburning engines. Another technique is to post into forums and other blogs, and link back to your blog. Last, you can also use technology, like blog rolls, or directories, like Stumble Upon, Digg, Blog Carnivals, Facebook and other means, to promote the traffic to your blog.

These are the tenements of the blogs I've seen that make money. Most bloggers don't get immediately success. The most successful blogs I've seen took months to build. Some of the best blogs took years before they took off. And, the rules of the game have changed. Many new blogs are taking longer to reach the tipping point because so many more people are blogging. Commit to a long-term strategy and follow your plan regularly, and your blog is much more likely to enable you to make money from your blog.

Leaving Keywords as FROM on Blog Posts?

I recently reviewed comments on a debate whether or not to leave keywords on blog posts over at ProBlogger. As someone who cares about methods to help clients grow their traffic, link back strategies are a vital component to that strategy. And, leaving comments on other blogs are a method to create link backs.

Have you noticed how some people will leave their site name, name and site name, or just name (see image - left).
Now, there are different reasons for each. Many people get ticked off when you just leave a keyword phrase. Such as "top chinaware" as your name. It is considered SPAM by many bloggers and they might edit out your post.
Therefore, I recommend against this strategy, even though it does give you a keyword link to your site.
Regarding the name, a poster, Tim B from Wordjot Newsletters, had this tip, which I recommend highly:
Use "Scott from AspireNow" as the name.
  • Gives a name so you know who it is
  • It indicates where the link will go, so it’s not such a mystery meat experience.
  • Gives a hint of your experience.
  • More memorable than just a full name.
  • Links the name with a website.
  • You can still reply to just the name. eg Scott@
I believe the best strategy is to put your name first, and site name second, or just your name. If you feel you MUST post a keyword, I would at least list my name first.

So, that's my feelings around this sensitive topic. Try not to SPAM people without adding any value to your post. I learned that lesson the hard way when I posted into a very active comment forum on a web design blog. Comment SPAM will get your traffic, but it might backfire into very negative traffic that will do nothing for your site. It is better to get specific traffic from a well-written post.

Take the high road when posting on other blogs, remember that content of your posting is STILL king when it comes to this type of activity.
